ASOC is proud to be a founding member of the High Seas Alliance, which works to conserve those regions of the world's oceans that are beyond national jurisdiction. The high seas maintain an incredible amount of biodiversity but are threatened by overfishing, both legal and illegal, as well as pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction. The HSA is recommending that the upcoming Rio+20 UN sustainability conference take steps to dramatically improve high seas governance structures, which are often weak, and to establish a network of protected areas and reserves in the high seas.
