Our team

Meet our international team of staff and campaigners, our Coalition members, Board of Directors and more.

OUR TEAM

Welcome

Our international team represents Coalition members on Antarctic issues, and is dedicated to upholding the founding principles of the Antarctic Treaty: that Antarctica and the Southern Ocean should be reserved for peace, science and the protection of the Antarctic environment.

OUR TEAM

International Campaigners

Our international team of campaigners are respected experts in their fields of Antarctic research. They work closely with countries that have a major presence in the Antarctic, and their analytical papers and reports help inform ASOC’s recommendations to Treaty parties.

Coalition Members

ASOC would not exist without the ongoing support of our dues-paying member organizations.

Members of the Coalition work with our team and partners to develop and achieve Antarctic conservation objectives. Join the Coalition

OUR TEAM

Supporters

We are grateful for the support of the following organizations.

Munson Foundation

The Curtis and Edith Munson Foundation was established in 1987. The Foundation supports initiatives targeted towards the safeguarding of natural resources, with an emphasis on marine resources and fisheries conservation.

Funding from the Munson Foundation supports ASOC’s work towards protecting and preserving marine biodiversity in the Ross Sea and Antarctic waters. In 2016, one of the world’s largest marine protected areas was established in the Ross Sea, protecting close to 800,000 square miles of this unique and fragile region.

Oceans 5

Oceans 5 focuses on achieving tangible results to secure global ocean health through establishing marine protected areas (MPAs) and regulating fisheries management.

Oceans 5 was established in 2011 and supports global conservation projects. The organization seeks to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030, through MPAs. ASOC shares this goal of protecting marine biodiversity through the designation of a network of MPAs in the Antarctic and surrounding Southern Ocean. Endowment from Oceans 5 bolsters ASOC’s work towards the designation of three marine reserves in the East Antarctic, Weddell Sea and the Antarctic Peninsula.

The Pew Charitable Trusts

The Pew Charitable Trusts was founded between 1948-1979 and has five main project areas including an extensive global conservation program.

The nonpartisan organization relies on empirical data to support initiatives that prioritize the conservation of wildlife and marine ecosystems around the world.

Projects include ‘International Fisheries’, ‘Antarctic Krill Conservation’, ‘Reducing Harmful Fisheries Subsidies’, ‘Marine Fellows’ and ‘Protecting Antarctica’s Southern Ocean’. The Pew Charitable Trusts is a Coalition member and shares ASOC’s commitment to protecting the Antarctic’s productive ecosystem and diverse marine life from human activities through the creation of marine protected areas.

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) was founded in 1948 and comprises a diverse and far-reaching network of more than 1,300 members including international governments, non-governmental organizations, scientific institutions and Indigenous communities.

The IUCN is engaged in extensive projects around the globe addressing issues related to climate change, ecosystem management, international ocean governance and marine protected areas. The IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas is at the forefront of facilitating the development of a large scale network of marine reserves to safeguard the integrity of marine biodiversity around the globe.

ASOC’s co-founder and board chair, Jim Barnes, received the 2021 Fred M. Packard Award, presented by the IUCN and the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) in recognition of his outstanding service to protected and conserved areas.

Blue Nature Alliance

The Blue Nature Alliance (BNA) is made up of five like-minded organizations: Conservation International, The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Global Environment Facility, Minderoo Foundation, and the Rob & Melani Walton Foundation.

BNA is committed to safeguarding marine biodiversity through global ocean conservation.

The Alliance works with diverse communities including international non-governmental organizations, the science sector, and Indigenous peoples to support its target of securing 7 million square miles of conserved ocean area in five years.

ASOC’s goal of establishing three marine protected areas in Antarctica by 2023 is aligned with Blue Nature Alliance’s dedication to efficient, large-scale ocean protection. The Blue Nature Alliance also supports ASOC’s campaign efforts to increase awareness on the importance of establishing marine reserves amidst a rapidly changing climate.

As part of our partnership with the Blue Nature Alliance, ASOC is committed to recognizing and respecting the rights of our partners and stakeholders, and employing inclusive decision-making practices.

We have created a grievance mechanism to facilitate timely responses and appropriate resolutions to any complaints that may arise from our partners or stakeholders as a result of our work. Submit a grievance here.
