Penguin Playground
“I was initially drawn to penguins because they are so cute, but the more I learned about them the more I became fascinated with their ability to thrive in harsh environments. This piece is technically a quilt, made by applying thickened dye to white cotton using paintbrushes, and then heavily “thread painting” with polyester thread to bring the flat images to life. It is an original design based on my own photographs.”

Penguin
“Penguins are on the endangered species list. The penguin stands partially in a target. Thus it is becoming endangered. This is part of a larger multi-media series titled: Commit to Memory: The Precipice of Extinction. Ballpoint, water color, acrylic and India ink on paper.”

THE PENGUINS
“Penguins are the significant image that comes to mind when I think of Antarctica. There is a huge white amount of nothing with a huge quantity of these black and white birds that brings life on uninhabited land. I make jewellery with Antarctica. I started it after I went to Antarctica, have not found any souvenir that I liked to remind me about the trip, so I made my own. I draw big drawings of penguins every time before making them from silver to study the shape.”

Full of fish
“Penguins are my favourite animals! I think they are the cutest and the most brilliant. This penguin is made all from paper. It’s called paper quilling. The whole piece is 3D and the belly of the penguin sticks right out from the canvas. The inspiration behind the piece is a happy, sleepy baby chick full of fish.”

Emperor Penguin Family under Aurora Australis
“Penguin is an animal that embodies happiness, friendliness, community living, inner strength, determination, playfulness and a carefree attitude. The IUCN Red List considers the African Penguin to be in the Endangered category (9 Penguin Species are categorized under Endangered). African Penguin Populations have declined by almost 65% since 1989 due to a number of different threats like oil spills and overfishing of food sources by humans. I am astonished by Emperor Penguins Parenting style. These emperor penguin parents take turns foraging at sea and caring for the chick in the colony. They are truly long-distance commuters taking foraging trips of one to three weeks averaging over 650 km per trip. They go to great lengths, literally and metaphorically, to care for their young. I used watercolor painting, Acrylic painting and gel pens.”

Adelie Penguin chick
“We used paper, crayons pencils and glitter for the beak and nails as we look for enhancing how strong and functional these features are in these gracious birds. We started off from an actual picture into drawing it out on paper.”

Gentoo Chicks hanging out
“The Antarctic is important for the environment and animals that live there. The melting glaciers and the trash that is being washed up to that beautiful, rugged land does interfere with the animals home land. I spend 2 month in Antarctica building new shelter for scientist this year. Watching penguins and seals daily was so precious and awaking how world is changing and impacting animals. The art was created live in Antarctica. This is watercolor on paper.”

Chinstraps in the Snow
“The Polar regions have always been a focus of interest of mine. Visiting Antarctica was a life changing moment for me as an artist. The pristine, untouched, environment was in huge contrast to the natural environment inhabited by man. I was lucky enough to sketch these, and many more, in Antarctica. Back home, I worked them in watercolour to produce these two sleepy Chinstraps sitting out the snowfall”

“Swimming, hiking, taking care of family and colony, all while facing countless dangers and looking great in the process. This makes the Penguin one of the most fascinating creatures on God’s green‚ or in this case, white‚ earth. Two happy penguins, spreading their wings below the surface. Digital Painting.”
